Mizuka Sano

Professor  Sano (retired), was in the Department of Chemistry, Division of Natural Science, International Christian University, in Japan.  He was a post-doctoral scientist in our laboratory, coming from the laboratory of Professor Hiroo Inokuchi. He and I showed in 1965 that electroluminescence in anthracene was caused by the recombination of thermalized holes and electrons,  proving definitely that the singlet exciton energy level of anthracene (and hence all aromatic conjugated hydrocarbons) was below the band gap. This was a seminal result in the field of electroluminescence.
